Safe Trampoline Activities

Trampoline activity is becoming a popular sport and recreation for people from all age groups. It is deemed to be a healthy and cheap activity for the family. It is also said to be a good low-impact workout that help strengthen bones and muscles. But as with any other fun activity comes the risk of trampoline accidents.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported in 2004 that 89,000 people were admitted to hospital emergency rooms due to trampoline accidents. The ages of the patients were between 6 to 43 years old. The Commission has also reported 11 deaths which were related to trampoline accidents. Six of these were victims at the age s of 12 to 19.

The American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) has said that there are 246, 875 accidents that are treated each year due to jumping on trampolines. And most of these accidents were incurred by people at the age of 14 or younger. Some accidents were simple cuts and bruises incurred during play on the trampoline. The most common are falling off due to somersaults and collision with other jumpers.

This is a serious issue to take into consideration. Tramp accidents have led someone to be a quadriplegic when he landed on his neck and incurred some spine injuries. Falling off the trampoline also may lead to head trauma, paralysis, bone fractures and dislocations, and ultimately, as said earlier, death.

It is important to remember that like in swimming pools where we have lifeguards, trampoline games/activities must always be under supervision to avoid such incidents, especially for children. It is best to know who is on the trampoline and what they're doing. Most accidents occur when people try to do something 'incredible' like somersaults. Avoid having people try something crazy on the trampoline to avoid such accidents.

If you are dealing with children, make sure that, as mentioned above, they are supervised by an adult. Also, try not to put a ladder near the trampoline as this may provide easy access for children and may go without you noticing. In this way, we are sure that we are safe by being aware who is on the trampoline, what the kids are doing, and when they are on the trampoline.

In choosing a trampoline, if you would like to purchase one, make sure that the frame, hooks and springs have shock absorbing pads or cushioning. Some accidents were lacerations caused by the exposed springs and frame of the trampoline. Having cushioning on those parts of the trampoline may prevent such problems from happening.
